Frenchie-specific costs to plan for
We can't put sourced dollar figures on these, but the research is clear about what's common in the breed:
- Breathing (BOAS). Some dogs need airway surgery. See our BOAS guide.
- Skin and ears. In a UK study of 2,228 French Bulldogs, skin problems (17.9%) and ear inflammation (14.0%) topped the list of conditions recorded in a year (O'Neill et al. 2018). Repeat vet visits add up. See allergies & skin care.
- Summer cooling. Air conditioning, a cooling mat and shorter walks are part of life with a flat-faced dog (heat guide).
- Insurance priced by breed. Premiums depend on breed, age, ZIP code and the options you choose, so get real quotes rather than relying on averages.
Where insurance fits
Insurance turns an unpredictable vet bill into a predictable monthly cost. For a Frenchie, check three things before price: whether hereditary conditions like BOAS are covered, how long the orthopedic waiting period is, and whether exam fees are included. Enroll before any symptoms appear, because pre-existing conditions are excluded by every insurer we checked.

Ways to keep costs down without cutting corners
- Ask your vet about personalizing your dog's vaccine schedule and comparing wellness fees (ASPCA tips).
- Brush teeth at home with a dog toothpaste; never human toothpaste (ASPCA).
- Do nail trims and brushing at home (ASPCA).
- Keep your Frenchie lean. It's good for breathing and the food bill (food guide).
- Buy a crate that fits the adult dog and use a divider (crate guide).

FAQ
How much does a French Bulldog cost per year?
We haven't found a reliable, sourced Frenchie-specific figure. For dogs in general, the ASPCA's 2021 table totals $1,391 a year, and Rover's 2026 research puts adult dogs at $1,930–$5,305 a year depending on size, breed and health. Plug your own prices into our cost calculator.
How much does a French Bulldog puppy cost to buy?
Prices vary widely by breeder and region, and neither the ASPCA nor Rover publishes a Frenchie-specific price. Rover's 2026 all-breed range for a breeder puppy is $675–$4,440 (adoption: $50–$500). Whatever the price, the things worth paying for are health testing and a breeder who answers questions about breathing, not color.
What does the first year cost?
More than later years, because of one-time costs. The ASPCA's 2021 table puts a dog's first year at $3,221, including $1,030 of one-time costs (spay/neuter, initial vaccines, crate, training and more) and $800 of "special costs" (professional grooming and dental). Rover's 2026 up-front costs range from $1,195 to $4,650.
Is pet insurance worth it for a French Bulldog?
It depends on your savings and risk tolerance, but timing matters more than anything: every insurer we checked excludes pre-existing conditions, so enrolling before any breathing, skin or spine signs show up is key. Compare BOAS and hereditary coverage on our insurance table.
Do "rare color" Frenchies cost more to own?
Color doesn't make a dog healthier, and merle, often marketed as "rare," is a disqualifying color under the breed standard. Don't pay a premium for color. If you already have a merle (like we do), see our merle health guide for the checks worth asking about.
